Why You Should Take Care of Your Scalp

Scalp tips men

If not taken care of properly, an unhealthy scalp can interfere with hair growth, mess up your hair's appearance, worsen dandruff, and become itchy or dry.Your scalp is also responsible for the health of your hair follicles, the holes your hair strands grow out of.

Are you paying attention to this important aspect of your hair’s health Use these scalp and follicle treatment tips to keep your hair in tip top shape.

Show Your Grays

Color treating your hair is not a great choice if you want to keep your scalp as healthy as possible. Some hair dyes contain harsh, dehydrating ingredients that can lead to severe hair damage.

If you do color your hair, do it as infrequently as possible and make an effort to use more natural solutions.

Cooler Showers

Love a piping hot shower, especially on a cold day? Maybe, but nearly scalding water dries out your scalp and - depending on the water temperature - can burn it too.

Opt for warm showers or only put your hair directly under the shower when using shampoo or conditioner.

Use Conditioner

Work hair conditioner into your scalp and hair strands two to three times a week to deliver nutrients to your scalp and hair. Since the scalp has similar properties much like the skin on your body, keeping it moisturized is paramount.

To get the best results, you need a product with the best ingredients. You can trust your hair with our Revitalizing Hair Conditioner - its formula includes avocado oil, borage oil, and organic aloe.

Don’t Pull at the Roots

You may unintentionally be yanking and tugging at your poor hair strands. That's no good since it can damage and weaken your hair and irritate your scalp.

There are two big changes you can make to treat your hair roots better:

  • Avoid wearing tight hats as they can cause "traction alopecia," a condition where hair is pulled out of the scalp. Once a hair root has been permanently ripped out of a follicle, it will never grow another hair strand again.
  • Take it easy when drying your hair. When your hair is wet, it is highly susceptible to breaking and having the root pulled out of the scalp. So avoid drying your hair vigorously with a towel. It’s best to let hair air dry as much as possible. If towel drying is necessary, do it gently.

Take It Easy When Drying

This is one of the easiest preventative hair loss solutions for men. When your hair is wet, it is highly susceptible to breaking and having the root pulled out of the scalp.

So avoid drying your hair vigorously with a towel. It’s best to let hair air dry as much as possible. If towel drying is necessary, do it gently.

Avoid Harmful Hair Tools

Be careful when using a brush on wet hair - that's when it is most vulnerable to breaking. When combing through wet hair, use a wide-toothed comb and gently work out any tangles if you have longer hair.

Avoid using the hot setting on your blow dryer for the same reasons as you should avoid an overly hot shower; it can dry out and potentially burn your scalp. If your hair style depends on a blow dryer but you're also concerned about scalp damage, maybe it's time to consider a new look.

If You Have Short Hair, Exfoliate Your Scalp Weekly

This one's only for guys with short or fine hair. Once a week, you can remove dead skin cells and build up from clogging your hair follicles with an exfoliating scrub like our Renewing Face Scrub.

You don't have to get aggressive here - just apply the product gently and let the ingredients do their work, no elbow grease necessary.

Longer and thicker hair will be too thick to allow the scrubbing particles to reach the scalp effectively, so if that's your hair situation you can skip this tip.

Get a Scalp Massage

This one isn't for everyone and may be seem like a luxury - but it's also a great experience. Ask your barber for a scalp massage (or find a place that offers them) as it promotes blood flow to the scalp, stimulating the delivery of nutrients to the scalp, as well as hair growth. On top of it, a scalp massage feels damn good. It's win-win.
