Men: How to Prevent Excess Oily Skin

The best face wash for men with oily skin

Does your face look oily and greasy 5 minutes after you wash it? If so, you definitely have an oily skin type. Many men have oily skin, but that doesn’t mean you have to live with it. Learn why men have oily skin and a few skin care tips for men with oily skin to get that clear, no shine complexion.

What Causes Oily Skin in Men?

Underneath your skin are glands called sebaceous glands. These glands are responsible for protecting your skin with natural lubrication (oils) called sebum. While this is all good and normal, men also have a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) in their body. This hormone is one of the basic building blocks of what makes you a man. However, a higher level of DHT in the body causes over production of sebum, leaving your skin looking greasy and oily.

It’s not all bad though, oilier skin tends to age much better than dry skin. So when everyone else looks wrinkled and tired, your skin will be firmer and more energized.

How to Prevent Excessive and Treat Oily Skin in Men

Since you now know oily skin is a function of being a man, you should understand it comes with the territory of being a man. You can, however, mitigate excess oil production by following these skin care tips for men with oily skin.

You’ll want to cleanse your face with a face wash for men with oily skin twice a day; once in the morning and then before you go to bed. We also suggest doing a quick cleanse mid day if you notice too much “shine” accumulating on your skin.

Be careful to not over wash your face, as this can excessively dry out the skin – causing break outs and even worse, excess oil production. Your skin has a certain set point of oil required to maintain homeostasis and pH balance. If you excessively dry out your face, it goes into oil production overdrive to get the skin back to its natural state.

Whatever you do, make sure you do not use soap on your face or salicylic acid products. The ingredients in these products will excessively over dry your face, often causing irritation.

Scrub (Exfoliate)

You’ll want to exfoliate your skin 1 – 2x a week using a face scrub for men to remove dead skin cells and other build up that can accumulate due to your over active sebaceous glands. Be careful when you exfoliate though – excessively scrubbing can actually cause over drying, and as mentioned above, excess oil production. Men with oily skin need to be as gentle with their skin as a guy with sensitive skin.

Even with oily skin, you’ll want to keep a moisturized face. Your skin needs moisture, and without it, it will create extra oil as a layer of protection. Oil production and keeping your face moisturized are two different things.

Use an oil free face moisturizer for men once a day, either in the morning or before you go to bed. The best face moisturizer for men with oily skin will be very lightweight, able to sink into the skin and not sit on top of it. Using a face moisturizer will help feed necessary nutrients to your face so it looks energized and help prevent aging.

Make sure to avoid men’s shaving creams and men’s aftershave’s that have alcohol in their ingredients. Alcohol is a well known skin irritant and excessively dries out the skin. The best shave cream for men and the best aftershave for men will contain no alcohol. In addition, avoid men’s aftershaves that contain menthol. While it might give a great “tingly” feeling, it too will over dry your face leading to excess oil production.
